Billabong's Voyage: Journals & Maps

UPDATE:  the below map is not all the way up to date.  You might want to check out our Where we've been map, which has our entire route and allows navigation of both this website and our blog (with access to journals, blogs, photographs, and more) all from one interactive (and very cool) map.

From Ventura, California to the Mediterranean we've sailed over 27,000 nm! Use the interactive Google Map below to follow our route and to browse our Journals, Blogs, & Photos by location. Simply toggle on the year(s) of interest, select an icon to get a description, then click on the link in the description to open the appropriate page. For additional details, including an expanded tree view of available web content, click on the specific year link (Year x Web).  Use the +/- and arrow buttons in the upper left hand corner of the map to pan and zoom.

To view a brief (text) summary of our voyage (both past & planned) Click here.
There are additional map and journal viewing options underneath the Google Map.

Other map options

Google Earth:  Get even more details of our sailing route including passages, anchorages, day & nights at sea, and web content place marks (with navigation to our photos, blogs, and journals).  [Google Earth Software required, and can be downloaded here, it's free].  Once Google Earth is properly installed just click on the photo left and the file will automatically load into Google Earth.

Satellite Photographs:  Before we started using Google Earth, we loaded our routes on top of relevant satellite images (as shown left).  There are 18 images total. (No additional software required)

Legacy Flat Maps (boorrrriiiing!):  Way back in the beginning we didn't know about all this fun Google stuff, so we used some lame flat map images (as shown right).  For legacy purposes, you can still get to those here (they cover up to Vanuatu).  (No additional software required)

bullet March 1 - 7, 2008:  Volcanic peaks of the Red Sea
Our first stop in the Red Sea is at Mersa Dudu, Eritrea, where volcanic cones rise from the desert.

bullet February 26 - 29, 2008:  Fun in Arab Town
Aden, Yemen was an unexpected delight.  We enjoyed the culture, the scenery, and the rest.

bullet February 21 - 26, 2008:  At it again - another 617 miles under our belt
The passage from Oman to Aden (Yemen) included sandstorms and some rough seas, but at least it was pirate free!

bullet February 15 - 20, 2008:  Repairs, repairs, and more repairs
We didn't have much time for fun in Salalah, Oman as we were too busy trying to clean-up the mess created from the passage getting there.

bullet February 5 - 15, 2008:  Bashing through the Indian Ocean
So much for the advertised excellent passages of the Northern Indian Ocean.  With exception of the fish catching, this was one of Billabong's worst passages to date.

bullet January 29 - Feb 5, 2008: Another Idyllic Atoll, with a Culture twist
Uligan, Maldives was a fantastic break from the Indian Ocean passages.  The atoll anchorage was like many others, but the culture, people, and living arrangements were unique to those we'd seen in the South Pacific.

bullet January 17 - 29 2008: Northern Indian Ocean Crapola Begins
Thailand to Uligan, Maldives was not the pleasant trip we were hoping for, but at least there were fish! (repeat of Blog)
